Nobody Cares About Eye Color

Writers seem to love to tell the reader the eye colors of their characters, especially the main character's or the love interest's. But do readers care about this? I think not.

Instead, tell us about that scar on his cheek that he got when he was eight, and he had to get stitches, and that leaves him self conscious. For added intrigue, don't immediately tell us how he got the scar. Make it a small mystery. Or a big mystery.

In general, don't bother with eye color when you can give us something that will make the character unique, or develop some trait that affects her life.

There's another issue with eye color. It's usually blue, or green, or gray, but seldom brown. Writers introduce bias by making the single most common eye color the least desirable. So, unless it's important, like your character is a demon with red eyes, or something like that, skip the eye color. As a bonus, you don't ever have to worry about forgetting the eye color and accidentally switching it later.
